We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Social Worker Assistant to join our team in West Vancouver.

Reporting to the Case Management and co-supervised by Administration Team Leader, the Social Worker Assistant position provides case management assistance and assumes limited delegated authority under the Child Family and Community Service Act. Working under the direction of a delegated Social Worker, provides supports for a range of clients in such areas as daily living, resources, programs, transportation. Helps assure that service provided are meeting the client’s needs. Position requires strong knowledge of federal and provincial Child & Family Service policies, practices and protocols, including knowledge of delegated authority from the provincial Ministry of Child & Family Development is required.  The incumbent is required to have a good understanding of the professional staff’s requirements, court processes, case management techniques and community resources.  The incumbent is responsible for adhering to relevant policy and procedures, carrying out their work activities professionally and responsibly, and keeping clients safe and well at all times. Position has a high level of people interaction, requiring tact, diplomacy.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Works with foster parents regarding the transition for CIC, arranging the move, completing an inventory of the child’s possession and informing the foster parents of the child’s needs/behavior, etc. Observes, gathers and reports to Social Worker, on the relationship between the foster parents and the child, how the child is adjusting, school attendance, etc.
  • Liaises with community professionals to support CIC and parents. Accompanies children to activities as required, obtains reports from physicians, assists with coordination of services for CIC, etc.
  • Provides support and works with families by arranging appointments, supporting access between child and family, supervises children, advocates, attends community meetings and locates appropriate programming for families. Monitors client’s appointment attendance and reports back to Social Worker.
  • Supports Case Manager, Youth-In-Care (YIC), Youth on Agreements and Services Providers in developing independent living plans for youth. Assists YIC by providing resources, completing applications, budgeting, locating housing and attends court under the Young Offenders Act to provide proof of age as directed.
  • Drafts and serves routine court documents as directed by the Social Worker. Provides support to social worker during court appearances where necessary.
  • Provides direct support/assistance to Social Workers. Attends and arranges meetings, investigations, and case conferences, taking notes and providing input on clients. Gathers information, reviews files and maintains a “bring forward” filing system for Social Workers.
  • Provides transportation assistance and accompanies children to routine medical/dental appointments.
  • Performs administrative duties i.e. research, applications, updates files, completes referral documents, keeps files up to date, etc.
  • Adheres to workplace health & safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.
  • Participates as member of the Case Management and Ayas Men Men Child & Family Services Teams.


You will also demonstrate:

  • Diploma in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Human Services, Social Science discipline or other related child/family field from recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of directly-related experience in the majority of duties listed in the job description including working directly with children, youth & families; providing direct support to social workers, research/assisting with court/admin processes, etc.
  • As career progresses, incumbent will be required to successfully complete job-required, short-term upgrading, training/courses relating to child care, life planning and analyzing problems, supporting children in care/their families etc.
  • Requires comprehensive knowledge of and ability to demonstrate and carry out the competencies noted below in appendix.
  • Experience as an intermediate level user of the Internet, Microsoft Office Applications i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.
  • Working experience with a large scale computerized database system. Experience with JD Edwards is an asset.
  • Recent experience using computer applications i.e. Management Information System (MIS) and Integrated Case Management (ICM) computer systems, or willing to learn within set timeframe.
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations Community (particularly Squamish) is an asset.
  • Must have a valid BC Driver’s License Class 4 or 5.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Must be willing to travel.
  • Must successfully complete Criminal Records Check with vulnerable sector search as per Squamish Nation Policy.
  • Requires: Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the Ministry for the level of this position.
